Orin Jacob Syer

Biography

Orin currently studies with Callum Smart at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he is to commence his master’s studies with a scholarship in September 2024. Recent highlights of his undergraduate include playing in the RNCM Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Douglas Boyd, and a side-by-side project with the Manchester Camerata, playing Beethoven’s 6th Symphony. Other orchestral projects include working under Sir Mark Elder, Clark Rundell, and Peter Whelan.

Orin has a wide interest in solo repertoire and is currently working on Ysaÿe’s 2nd Sonata in A minor and Beethoven’s Sonata for violin and piano No.2 in A major. A recent lesson with Ning Feng on Bach’s 3rd Partita proved insightful and inspiring. In addition, he frequently enjoys specialist baroque violin training from Dr Pauline Nobes and is developing his knowledge on historically informed performance with Roger Hamilton.

Chamber music is another key interest of Orin’s. Last year, he had the privilege of playing Mendelssohn’s Octet alongside members of the Elias Quartet, which proved to be an inspiring experience. Currently, his quartet are playing Beethoven’s op.95 no.11 in F minor in preparation for a recital in May and receive regular coaching from many acclaimed musicians.

Growing up in London, Orin was inspired from a young age by the busy classical music scene and in particular by the LSO. Later, he took part in several of their outreach programs, playing alongside members of the orchestra in the Barbican’s main hall under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, and Sir Simon Rattle. These early experiences made a profound impact on his desire to become a violinist.

He plays on a beautiful 18th-century violin made in England by Alexander Kennedy, generously funded by a donor. In 2019, he completed his ARSM Diploma with distinction.
